Qing Kangxi Wucai Mallet Vase with Dragon Design
A Symbol of Peace: The Mallet Vase and Its Auspicious Resonance in Early Qing Society

This striking mallet vase, adorned with vibrant five-color (wucai) dragons, is a rare exemplar of Kangxi-period ceramic artistry. Its distinctive form derives from the “mallet” (棒槌)—a tool used for beating laundry—transformed into a symbol of peace and prosperity during a tumultuous era in early Qing history.

From Domestic Tool to Peaceful Allegory
The Kangxi Emperor reigned during a time of consolidation following decades of war. The shape of this vessel, reminiscent of a laundry mallet, evoked the memory of women laboring at home, preparing winter garments for their soldier husbands stationed at remote borders. In popular belief, the rhythmic sound of the mallet came to symbolize longing, devotion, and ultimately, the hope for peace. Thus, these vases were also known as “ping” vases—a pun on the word for peace (平), encapsulating the wish for a tranquil empire.

Dragon Motifs and Imperial Craftsmanship
The body is vividly painted with imperial dragons amidst clouds, flames, and ocean waves—a motif reserved for power and cosmic authority. Executed in the wucai palette of underglaze blue and overglaze enamel, the decorations showcase Kangxi’s high standards in kiln technology, aesthetic innovation, and symbolic layering. The slender neck and balanced proportions further attest to the precision of Qing imperial workshops.

Cultural Memory in Porcelain Form
Mallet vases from the Kangxi reign were not merely utilitarian or decorative—they were deeply embedded in the cultural psyche, embodying the wish for stability in an empire emerging from unrest. Today, surviving examples like this serve as material witnesses to the artistic and emotional landscapes of early Qing China.
