Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period Wucai Dish with Qilin and Four Auspicious Beasts

A Harmony of Virtue and Power: Imperial Iconography in Wucai Porcelain

This wucai dish from the Qianlong period exemplifies the vibrant artistry and symbolic sophistication of early imperial porcelain. Fashioned in the classic “flared rim and curved wall” shape of Qianlong court wares, the dish features a luminous glaze and a finely potted body of pure white porcelain. At the center, a qilin stands nobly on a patch of stylized grass and rocks, surrounded by four distinct beasts, each rendered with spirited individuality.

Imperial Symbolism and Confucian Order
The scene evokes the classical Chinese belief in the harmony of the five relationships (wulun), with the central qilin representing benevolence and divine virtue. Surrounding beasts—such as the tiger, deer, and others—symbolize loyalty, filial piety, integrity, and righteousness. The sparse yet calculated placement of foliage, painted using delicate “outline and wash” brush techniques, reflects the ancient ideal of the qilin as a creature so gentle it avoids stepping on living grass—an allegory of enlightened rule.

A Rare Wucai Masterpiece of the Qianlong Court
By the mid-Qianlong reign, famille rose had become dominant, making pure wucai pieces increasingly rare. This dish, with its emphasis on bold outlines, saturated pigments, and rich overglaze detailing, is a rare example of early Qianlong five-color porcelain retaining Kangxi stylistic vigor while embracing imperial refinement. The qilin, a herald of auspicious governance, further implies that this was likely an imperial commission—possibly for ceremonial display. Few such examples exist today, and similar pieces have fetched significant prices in recent international auctions, underscoring their prestige and desirability among connoisseurs.
