Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period Blue and White Baoyue Moonflask
A Rare Form Reflecting Imperial Innovation and Kiln Mastery

This blue and white moonflask from the Kangxi period, also known as a baoyueping or “precious moon bottle,” exemplifies the artistic ingenuity and technical precision of early Qing imperial porcelain.

Form imbued with symbolism and complexity. The name “moonflask” derives from its full, rounded body that resembles a harvest moon — a symbol of harmony and completeness. However, its symmetrical form poses significant technical challenges: during firing, the weight of the broad body often caused warping or collapse. That this piece survived the kiln process intact is a testament to both the skill of the craftsmen and the high standards of the imperial kilns.

A product of imperial policy and artistic revival. The reign of the Kangxi Emperor marked a renaissance in porcelain production. With policies like “official design, private execution,” the Qing court revitalized the Jingdezhen imperial kilns, combining court oversight with the skilled labor of civilian artisans. This hybrid system ensured consistent quality while fostering innovation — this moonflask being a prime example.

Elegant material and vivid decoration. The porcelain body is robust and finely potted. The underglaze blue is rich and precise, displaying the classic Kangxi palette with clarity and tonal depth. The symmetrical form and crisp detailing make this flask not just a utilitarian vessel, but a refined cultural artifact.

Dimensions:
• Height: 35.5 cm / 13.98 in
• Shoulder Width: 0 cm (moonflask form)
• Body Diameter: 25 cm / 9.84 in
• Base Diameter: 0 cm (not measurable due to form)
• Rim Diameter: 5 cm / 1.97 in
• Weight: 3670 g

Rarity and historic significance.
Moonflasks of this size and perfection are extremely scarce due to the high failure rate during production. As an embodiment of the Kangxi court’s pursuit of technical excellence and aesthetic refinement, this piece stands as a historical touchstone — a fusion of imperial vision, Confucian ideals, and master craftsmanship.

• 肩寬:0 cm(抱月瓶器型無肩)
• 底徑:0 cm(因形制無法測量)
