Republic Period Famille-Rose Brush Pot with Shallow Enamel Decoration by Yu Xiaoqiu
Pioneer of Literati Porcelain Painting in the Transitional Era

Porcelain of the Republic of China period (1912–1949) retained the sophisticated craftsmanship of the late Qing dynasty while embracing changes brought by modernization and Western influence. As imperial kiln systems dissolved amidst political turmoil, private kilns flourished, particularly in Jingdezhen, which remained a central hub for ceramic innovation. Artisans and literati painters played an essential role in redefining porcelain as both a commercial and artistic medium.

This brush pot is a rare work by Yu Xiaoqiu, a notable artist of the era known for his mastery of shallow enamel painting (qianjiang cai), a revolutionary overglaze technique that emerged from the late Qing into the early Republic period. Unlike traditional famille-rose decoration, shallow enamel emphasized the fusion of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving directly on ceramic surfaces—epitomizing the concept of literati ceramics. Though the low firing temperature (650–700°C) made the glaze prone to wear, it marked a pivotal departure from imperial decorative priorities, favoring expressive, ink-like compositions on porcelain.

This brush pot exemplifies the delicate brushwork, poetic sentiment, and refined aesthetic that characterize shallow enamel ware. With few surviving examples and high technical demands, works by recognized masters like Yu Xiaoqiu are prized both for their artistic merit and historical value, representing an irreplaceable chapter in the evolution of modern Chinese ceramic art.
