This famille-rose floral bowl with blue glaze from the Yongzheng reign exemplifies the pinnacle of imperial porcelain craftsmanship in the Qing dynasty. The painting technique draws from the refined traditions of the court academy, combining both “boneless” (mogu) and outline-and-fill methods. Using fine weasel-hair brushes, artisans delicately outlined each floral vein with enamel, then applied multiple translucent layers using soft goat-hair brushes—with over five layers of gradation per petal. All strokes were executed during the critical semi-dry glaze phase, allowing pigments to penetrate without cracking. The natural curve of branches and leaves reveals the famed “earthworm trace” brushwork, alive with spontaneous vitality.

The enamel palette was meticulously formulated: carmine pink employed colloidal gold, pale green derived from copper oxide, and iron red was blended with finely ground agate. Through careful kiln firing, these mineral colors achieved a uniquely gentle sheen. The composition reflects the cyclical order of the Four Seasons—fully open blossoms face forward, accompanied by buds and half-open flowers; leaves are painted with front-and-back shading to reflect the court's pursuit of realism and natural study (gewu zhizhi).

The bowl’s outer wall is coated in a deep blue glaze, rendered using cobalt pigment in the traditional sacrificial blue (ji lan) technique. Fired once at over 1280°C, the glaze forms a rich, glassy coat—dark as oceanic depths, yet even and tranquil. A faint “orange peel” texture on the surface testifies to expert control of glaze fluidity under high temperatures. The base is inscribed with a six-character “Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi” mark in double-ring regular script, evoking imperial authority and precision.

Fewer than 100 examples of such refinement are known to exist. The thin-body carving and trimming techniques have been lost to history, as were the precise mineral enamel formulas—disrupted during later unrest. Modern reproductions fail to recapture the translucency and delicacy of the original. This bowl embodies a rare trifecta of artistic elegance, historical significance, and collector value, serving as a quintessential expression of Eastern Rococo aesthetics.
