Qing Yongzheng Rouge-Pink Glazed Dish
Refined Elegance in Imported Western Red: A Testament to Qing Court Aesthetics

The exquisite rouge-pink glaze, known in the West as “rose pink” or “rose enamel,” originated in the late Kangxi reign and reached its technical and aesthetic zenith during the Yongzheng period (1723–1735). This glaze, colored by minute amounts of colloidal gold, is fired at a low temperature of approximately 800°C, resulting in a lustrous, soft pink tone reminiscent of cosmetic rouge—hence its Chinese name yanzhihong (rouge red). The pigment, originally introduced from Europe, also earned the names “yangjin red” or “Western red.”

This dish exemplifies the Yongzheng court's mastery in subtle yet refined porcelains. The glaze varies in hue, from intense “rouge purple” to delicate “light rouge” and nearly translucent “pale pink.” The present example features the classic form associated with Yongzheng imperial wares: thin-walled, elegant in proportion, and refined in finish. Most known examples, including this dish, exhibit white glaze on the interior and rouge-pink glaze on the exterior—a typical aesthetic choice of the period. Only a rare few have rouge-pink applied inside and out.

Rouge-pink glazed porcelains were formally recorded in Tang Ying’s 1735 “Taocheng Jishi” (Ceramic Records), listing it among 57 varieties of tribute wares. Their delicacy, subtle color harmony, and Western exoticism reflect both technical innovation and cultural openness in the Yongzheng era.

清雍正 胭脂紅釉碟
宮廷典雅.洋紅東漸的美學見證

胭脂紅釉源自清康熙末期,而於雍正年間(1723–1735)最為盛行,尤以品質精緻著稱。該釉彩以極少量金為呈色劑,於約800℃低溫焙燒成型,色澤柔和細膩,彷如仕女胭脂,因而得名“胭脂紅”,西人則稱其為“玫瑰紅”或“薔薇紅”。由於技術源於歐洲,亦有“洋金紅”、“西洋紅”之稱。

本碟通體器形秀雅,胎體輕薄,內施白釉,外施胭脂紅釉,為雍正朝典型器式。釉色溫潤柔美,細膩中透出宮廷氣息。胭脂紅釉色澤層次多樣,有“胭脂紫”、“胭脂水”與“淡粉紅”之別,對燒造技藝要求極高。

雍正十三年,督陶官唐英於《陶成紀事》中列出五十七種歲例貢瓷,其中即包括“西洋紅色器皿”,足見此類釉瓷之地位。傳世雍正胭脂紅釉器多為盤、碗、杯等文雅日用器,常為內白外紅設色,少數通體紅釉者更為珍罕。
