Ming Dynasty, Yongle Period Blue and White Vase with Imported Sumaliqing Cobalt
A Landmark of Early Ming Aesthetics and Global Exchange

This blue and white vase from the Yongle period exemplifies the high refinement and evolving artistic vision of early Ming imperial porcelain. It reflects not only a technical milestone in ceramic craftsmanship, but also a cultural leap forward, marking the emergence of a distinctly Ming identity in form and decoration.

A revolution in blue — the brilliance of Sumaliqing.
This piece is painted in imported cobalt pigment known as Sumaliqing, sourced from the Middle East. Its unique chemistry yields a luminous, vivid blue with deep, inky outlines and characteristic “iron-spot” silver-black flecking — a stark contrast to the flatter hues of native Chinese cobalt. The import of this pigment sparked the second great peak in blue-and-white porcelain production, following the Yuan dynasty’s initial innovation.

Transcending Yuan traditions.
While Yuan dynasty wares favored massive forms and bold motifs, Yongle porcelain embraced elegance, balance, and subtlety. This vase adopts a more fluid and restrained silhouette, paired with finely rendered ornamentation. The decorative scheme moves beyond earlier templates, establishing a new court aesthetic — refined, symbolic, and harmonized.

Form, glaze, and brushwork in perfect unity.
The body is thinly potted yet sturdy, covered in a smooth glaze with soft luster. The brushwork is controlled yet expressive, capturing the confident hand of imperial artisans. Against the white ground, the imported blue creates stunning contrast and depth, reinforcing its status as a luxury object and diplomatic gift.

Dimensions:
• Height: 34.5 cm / 13.58 in
• Shoulder Width: 0 cm (tapered form without measurable shoulder)
• Body Diameter: 20.6 cm / 8.11 in
• Base Diameter: 11.4 cm / 4.49 in
• Rim Diameter: 9.2 cm / 3.62 in
• Weight: 2540 g

Historical, aesthetic, and scholarly value.
Yongle blue and white porcelain is highly prized for its rarity, superb quality, and transitional importance in Chinese ceramic history. With its use of imported cobalt and advanced decorative language, this vase embodies a moment of global exchange and artistic redefinition. It stands as a vital reference for collectors, curators, and connoisseurs worldwide.
