Ming Dynasty, Yongle Period Copper Red-Glazed Dish
The Crimson Glory of Early Ming Innovation

This remarkable copper red-glazed dish from the Yongle reign of the Ming dynasty epitomizes the early triumphs of Jingdezhen’s technical mastery. Revered as one of the most challenging glaze types to produce, the vibrant, blood-red color reflects the peak of imperial ceramic achievement.

Yongle: A Reign of Refined Excellence
The Yongle Emperor, third ruler of the Ming dynasty, ushered in a golden age of porcelain innovation. A famous court saying of the time went, “All wares are exquisite, but blue-and-white is the most prized.” Yet it was in copper red — the most temperamental of glazes — that the potters of Jingdezhen achieved a feat unseen before in Chinese ceramic history. The color’s vibrancy, purity, and uniformity marked a break from the dull, uneven reds of the Yuan period and earned praise as “chicken-blood red,” “bright red,” or “ruby red.”

Red Glaze: The Ultimate Test of the Kiln
The phrase “If you want to go broke, fire red” (要想窮,就燒紅) reflects the perilous cost of firing copper red wares. The glaze, derived from copper oxide, must be fired in a strictly controlled reducing atmosphere. A slight misstep in timing, temperature, or atmosphere would cause the color to dull, blacken, or fail completely. Archaeological excavations at the Zhushan kiln site in Jingdezhen have unearthed vast quantities of failed copper red shards, bearing witness to the extraordinary difficulty of mastering this technique.

Legacy of Brilliance
Successfully fired examples from the Yongle reign remain exceedingly rare. Their bold crimson glaze and minimalist elegance reflect a courtly aesthetic of clarity and depth — and a ceramic legacy born of both risk and brilliance. Today, such works are celebrated as milestones in the evolution of high-fired monochrome porcelain.
