A Pair of Imperial Qianlong Sky-Blue Glazed Dragon-Handle Vases
— Masterworks of Monochrome Porcelain from the Qing Dynasty

This exquisite pair of vases, crafted during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, exemplifies the zenith of imperial monochrome glaze porcelain. Each vase is covered in a flawless, translucent sky-blue glaze—serene and luminous like the clear sky after rain, evoking the quiet elegance of Song dynasty celadons while incorporating technical innovations unique to the Qianlong period. The glaze reveals subtle tonal variations, masterfully developed through precise kiln control, creating a sense of depth and painterly rhythm.

The vase form is upright and refined, with a pair of boldly rendered chi-dragon handles at the neck. These sinuous creatures symbolize imperial authority and divine guardianship, alluding to the “Dragon Teaching His Son” motif often associated with the emperor’s paternal vision. The body is undecorated, relying solely on the glaze to convey its aesthetic essence—an embodiment of the Daoist ideal of “great simplicity contains great beauty.” The porcelain body is dense and creamy, expertly thrown and trimmed. The base is inscribed with the six-character mark Da Qing Qianlong Nianzhi in underglaze blue, indicating its official kiln origin.

Despite its age of over two centuries, the pair remains in excellent condition, with the glaze retaining its original richness and clarity. These vases stand as exemplary representatives of Qianlong monochrome porcelain.

Value and Collectibility:
Sky-blue glaze was among the most challenging monochromes to produce during the Qianlong era due to its low yield rate and complex firing requirements. As such, complete and perfectly preserved pieces are exceedingly rare. In recent years, similar examples have fetched over HKD 10 million at major auction houses such as Christie’s Hong Kong, affirming the enduring market appeal and capital value of imperial monochrome wares.

This matching pair, with impeccable glaze, elegant form, and imperial provenance, holds significant historical, artistic, and investment value. It is a benchmark collection-grade asset sought after by elite collectors.
