Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period Wucai Jar with Floral Decoration
A Vibrant Fusion of Color, Technique, and Imperial Patronage

This Wucai jar from the Kangxi period exemplifies the artistic innovation and vivid palette that defined early Qing overglaze porcelain. “Wucai” (literally “five colors”) refers to the harmonious use of overglaze and underglaze painting, resulting in some of the most brilliant ceramics in Chinese art history.

A triumph of color chemistry.
Wucai decoration combines a base of underglaze blue with overglaze enamels — traditionally red, green, yellow, purple, and occasionally black — applied after the first firing. The vessel is then fired again at 770–800°C to fuse the enamels to the surface, achieving bright, layered hues with dynamic contrasts. During the Kangxi era, craftsmen extended this technique to colored glazes and non-white grounds, making each piece uniquely expressive.

Aesthetic distinctiveness and technical mastery.
This jar features rich colors applied over a porcelain body that is white, smooth, and lustrous. The painted motifs, likely floral or auspicious, are outlined with fluid, confident brushstrokes, exemplifying the decorative precision of the imperial workshops. The form is well-proportioned, with a broad shoulder tapering gracefully toward a steady foot — robust yet elegant.

Imperial backing and ceramic renaissance.
Under the Kangxi Emperor, the Jingdezhen kilns thrived. The policy of “official design, private execution” combined imperial direction with civilian expertise, revitalizing Qing ceramics and allowing for more experimentation with color and form — with Wucai ware as one of the greatest beneficiaries.
