This famille-rose "Bird and Flower" vase from the Yongzheng period epitomizes the artistic apex of Qing imperial porcelain. The surface is prepared with a luminous glass-white enamel ground, serving as a radiant base for the overglaze decoration. Employing the "boneless" painting technique (mogu fa), the petals are shaded with more than ten gradated layers of color, transitioning from the lightest blush to vivid saturation. Fine carmine lines, as delicate as gossamer, articulate the veins of each leaf with exceptional refinement.

The birds’ plumage is first detailed in monochrome ink, then layered with enamel hues using superfine brushes, resulting in a richly textured, down-like effect. The artisan devised a unique "wall-crossing composition" wherein floral branches extend from the vase body into the inner shoulder and neck, creating an illusion of spatial depth rarely seen in porcelain painting.

The piece underwent a triple-firing process: high-temperature firing to form the porcelain body, followed by two successive low-temperature firings — the first to fuse the enamels and the second to apply a transparent glaze that enhances the porcelain’s radiant sheen. The palette introduces Western-imported enamels such as carmine rose and lemon yellow, harmonized into what is now known as the elegant and subdued Yongzheng color spectrum, thanks to the meticulous blending by imperial court painters.

The base bears a six-character reign mark — Yongzheng Nianzhi — in underglaze blue within double circles, exemplifying the rigorous standards of imperial kilns.

This vase encapsulates the pinnacle of technical and aesthetic achievement under the Yongzheng Emperor, fusing literati ideals of "poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal" into a singular courtly object. As a hallmark of the transitional art movement from Kangxi to Qianlong, it holds inestimable historical and scholarly significance and is recognized as an indispensable cultural cornerstone within top-tier porcelain collections.
