Ming Dynasty Chenghua Doucai 'Heaven' Mark Jar with Daylily Design
A Royal Vessel of Hidden Meanings and Sublime Sentiment

This elegant jar from the Chenghua reign (1465–1487) bears the rare and prestigious “Tian” (Heaven) mark at its base—a designation often interpreted as the “first under heaven,” referencing the opening line of the classical Thousand Character Essay: “Heaven and Earth, dark and yellow…” The use of the character “天” reflects the imperial ordering system of the Ming court, where “Tian” signified utmost precedence and exclusivity.

Doucai: Harmony of underglaze and overglaze.
Chenghua doucai porcelain is revered as the pinnacle of refinement in Ming dynasty ceramics. Its technique involves painting outlines in underglaze cobalt blue, followed by colored enamels overglaze to complete the composition. Soft yet luminous, these decorations are known for their subtlety, elegance, and royal taste.

Daylilies: Emblems of maternal love and fertility.
The design features the daylily (xuancao), a flower rich in poetic and symbolic significance. In The Book of Songs, the daylily is associated with forgetfulness of sorrow (“xuan” = forgetfulness), and later, in Records of Southern Plants, it is noted that pregnant women would wear the flower in hopes of bearing sons—earning it the name “boy-begetting herb.” By the Tang dynasty, poets such as Meng Jiao connected the daylily with maternal affection, calling it the “Mother’s Flower.”

Often paired with lotus motifs or boy figures, the daylily becomes a subtle metaphor for blessings of fertility, filial piety, and maternal virtue, seamlessly blending visual beauty with cultural meaning.

Dimensions:

Legacy and rarity.
Chenghua doucai wares were produced in limited quantity, largely reserved for imperial use. The combination of a “Tian” mark and auspicious floral symbolism places this jar among the most evocative survivals of Ming imperial ceramic art—coveted not only for its craftsmanship but also for the subtle philosophies it embodies.
