Ming Dynasty, Yongle Period Blue-Glazed Dish
Imperial Indigo: The Elegance of Yongle Blue

This Yongle period blue-glazed dish embodies the refined aesthetics and technological advancement of early Ming porcelain. Its smooth, lustrous cobalt glaze reflects the grandeur of a time when Chinese ceramics gained unprecedented prominence on the global stage.

The Yongle Reign: Stability and Global Reach
Reigning from 1403 to 1424, the Yongle Emperor presided over a period of political stability and flourishing craftsmanship. Beginning in 1405, Admiral Zheng He embarked on seven maritime expeditions that extended as far as the Mediterranean and East Africa. These voyages not only spread Chinese porcelain abroad but also brought back rare cobalt pigment known as Sumaliqing (苏麻离青), enhancing the artistry of blue-and-white wares at Jingdezhen. Alongside underglaze blue, monochrome glazes such as imperial blue became treasured court luxuries.

Blue Glaze: A Symbol of Prestige
As one of China’s signature high-temperature monochrome glazes, the rich indigo-blue finish required expert control of materials and kiln conditions. Blue-glazed wares were produced in small numbers for court use and ceremonial purposes. Their refined appearance and scarcity have long rendered them prized antiques, widely sought by collectors and connoisseurs.
